Sometimes it takes a while to see something you’ve been looking at your whole life. This has been true for Michelle Schmidt, who grew up looking at the brown hills of the Lewiston-Clarkston valley thinking they were bare. It wasn’t after a few decades, after she started looking closer, that she learned there was a lot more going on than she’d noticed.

Michelle finds her papercut inspiration outside. She notices beauty of all kinds, often small and ordinary, and enjoys the challenge of conveying that beauty -- visual and/or conceptual -- in her work. She likes how papercut allows her to draw attention to lines, texture, and light. Her current work is focused on celebrating local landscapes and features.
